Prevalence of Occupational Injuries in selected Coir Industries in Sri Lanka: a cross-sectional study

Introduction: The coir industry processes fibers from coconuts and is important for a high number of people in Sri Lanka. Coir workers handle several dangerous machines. This project has studied occupational injuries among workers. Methods: cross-sectional study was performed six medium-sized industries Lanka, each with 15-100 employees. who were present at work on the two days researchers visited respective (128 total 214 workers) interviewed socio-demographics, tasks they normally perform had experienced last three months. Independent T-tests Chi-square tests used to analyze differences between groups. Results: mean age 128 45 years 53.9% male. Totally 34 (26.6%) least one injury during past Women reported significantly more than men (38.9% vs 15.9%). operating machines other types (42.3% 22.0%). Slipped, tripped, fall (64%) most common events seen injured followed by cuts sharp objects or (20%). type reporting bruises (50%). Conclusion: More one-fourth have been months, indicating risk. raises concerns highlights need preventative measures minimize risks.
